For instance:
When a clerk shows a marked impatience when I count out nickles, dimes and pennies for a $6.29 purchase then mumbles "have a nice day", my firs reaction is to say "only if you get hit by a truck". My wife thinks this is terrible. What do you think.

I personally think we all have the right to be uncivil occasionally.

I guess it's your right, but it doesn't seem to be a good strategy for making your wife happy, or yourself. What good is it to alienate the clerk? Getting hit by a truck won't make her patient, unless we're talking about a hospital.

If she looks irritable, and you feel compelled to say something, maybe something like "the money's slow, but it still spends" may get your point across better and lighten things up!

LOL. If I were 77 and looking at the state of affairs today I'd probably be uncivil too :-) As long as it's just occasional and is warranted, to heck with civility.

I think it's kinda bitter for anyone to respond back like that. I know it sucks, but I find that people get more pissed when you just simply smile and walk away. People are always trying to bait another, don't fall for it. You're smarter then that, and it just makes you look like a jerky old man~when I'm sure you're not.

I think you need to be at least 90 before you can start using your age as an excuse for being rude.

I agree with your wife.

The Golden Rule applies to all ages.
And just because someone isn't kind to you, does not relieve you of the responsibility to be kind to others.
