Absolutely. They are called roof rats. Call an exterminator and plug up any holes you may have in and around the attic and the walls. Also check any way they can get in. If there are any tree limbs within 4 feet of the roof have them pruned. Keep at least 5-6 feet of all limbs away from the home. Roof rats can leap an easy 4 feet in the air. From your roof back to that tree limb. Check every nook and cranny to be sure there is no entrance for these guys to get in. Again i can not stress this enough call an exterminator

YES, the live very well in attics. My daughter lived in an older house for a while and could hear the rats running around at night. She was told that if you have rats you don't have mice and vise versa but she had both. She put poison in the attic and in the garage and found plenty of both dead. Unfortunately she had 2 dogs and both got into the poison and the vet tried but could not save them. There are also sticky strips you can put in the attic if you have pets but then you have to remove them with the dead critters on them or you can hire a service to get rid of them. Good luck, It is not your fault if you have them, they love clean spaces as well as dirty and cluttered.

Yes Plumby they do. My brother and his wife were over run by them a couple of years ago. It was a new build house and they even scuttled about inside the walls!
Bloody awful things, they did get rid of them in the end, best to get an expert in, my brother even resorted to shot gun down the rat hole! AND even a firework or two, before he realised they were staying put.
They had got in through a hole around a water pipe, which eventually led them up to the roof!

Please read entire post. Yes, Rats can live in attics. But please remember RATS ARE ACTUALLY FRIENDLY! They even have their own specific personalities...and they grieve when a rat that is close to them dies or is killed. Call a RELOCATING EXTERMINATOR. They will set traps and take the little guys where they can live happily without bothering humans.

Rats will find their way into any space however small. They do not have backbones so they can squeeze into the smallest of spaces. Yes they can live anywhere.

I'm pretty sure they could live anywhere there was some source of food and water. Keep in mind, their idea of food & water could be different than ours.
