Plato's theory (in the Republic) that children need to be raised in communal nurseries was tested and unsuccessful in 1920's Russia.

His statement that democracy is the worst kind of government seems to be bearing itself out in certain societies (the UK for example) too.

Socrates all but says outright the perfect society could never exist.
What he knew best is probably the best example: Athens, before the Peloponnese War, is a corrupted form, as are most so-called aristocratic regimes, eg. 19th century England.

Utopian projects have a long tradition, and short existence, Do you know Orwell's Animal Farm? It portrays the consequence of the impulse to create heaven on earth.

Plato was big on idealism and not so big on realism. Thats not to say that we can't learn a lot from him (we can and should) but his way of thinking is not very practical in the real world.
