OK...feel foolish here but I have to ask. Math problem is: 82 divide by 8. HELP!!?

OK....here goes the foolish question of the day. ;0)
82 divided by 8. Why do we not divide into the 8 and skip right to the 82? 8 can go into 8 right??? The answer does not come out right though it you divide into 8 first ( such as if the equation was 92 divided by 8 ....you would divide into the 9 first then bring down the 2 etc. to get the correct answer ). My son asked me this as a homework question. Help?! Thank you in advance for your assistance.

It does work if you divide into 8 first as you describe.

8 goes into 8 once, with nothing left over
Bring down the 2.
8 goes into 2 zero times. so far your quotient is 10 ( the 1 from the first step and the 0 from this one).

zero times 8 is 0. subtracted from 2, this gives a remainder of 2.

So the answer is '10 with 2 left over', or 10 and 2/8, otherwise known as 10.25.

8 x 1 =8
8 - 8 = 0
bring down the 2
8 into 2 = 0 now you have 10 at the top
0 x 8 = 0
2-0 = 2
add a decimal point and bring down the 0 that is behind the decimal point giving you 20
8 into 20 = 2 now you have 10.2 on top
2 x 8 = 16
20- 16 = 4 bring down another 0 to make it 40
8 into 40 = 5 which gives you

10.25 at the top

The only way I can explain is that our number system uses "place holders". 1, 10. 100. and so on. 82 is ten eights plus two singles. We cannot put nine singles into tens part of the number. This is kind of intuitive and hard to explain, at least for me! We can "guess" that 8 must go into 82 more then once.
