There is an injury level when riding dirt bikes....From having a bee flying into your helmet and stinging you on the face to hitting a tree at 50mph and breaking your back. It really depends on you and safe you ride and always no your limitations of skill and always buy and wear your safety gear and all the safety gear does is keep you from getting hurt worse..... Your chances are no different than football, basketball, soccer, skateboarding, surfing, skydiving, hockey.

Tell your Dad it's just a "bicycle" with an engine.
Would he let you ride a cross country bicycle through the woods, up and down mountains at 40 MPH?
Then what's the difference with a dirt bike?
A dirt bike can even be safer with all the protective gear you should wear.

The chances for injury are pretty high. This depends on how hard you ride, and if you even know how to ride.
The chances of death are a lot less, but anything can happen.
Get an ATV. I feel a lot safer on my quad. I also find myself getting hurt way less when falling off the quad as opposed to the dirt bike.
Everyone falls here and there, it's just a matter of how they crash and how fast they are going.
If you don't know how to ride, you will most likely sustain several mild injuries.

you can die or get injured driving or riding anything, it's up to you on how severe you want it to be. If you ride careful until you know the bike and then still ride like you have a brain you'll be fine. I've rode bikes and 4wheelers all my like and the only time I got hurt is when I got stupid and when I thought I had the bike liked and it showed me who the boss was.
