You can buy him a album and say pictures to follow...I did last year for my hubby's grandma and everythime I see her we bring pics to fill her album.
Also, a nice gift basket for his favorite candies/goodies is a nice gift.

At 90, there are things they probably can't do for themselves anymore - like yard work. Does their garden look like it might need a trim or weeding? You mentioned that they have money, but they may not have a handy person to help around the house. You may even offer to help them shop for or wrap presents they intend to give. Or ask if they need help baking any family hoilday goodies (if you're good in the kitchen). My grandparents said that all they really wanted was a nice family photo - so we rounded up all the grandkids and great-grandkids and asked a family friend to take some photos for us. Then we framed them to match the decor of the house. Of course this only works if they are family - you didn't say they were. You could always give them movie tickets and offer to drive them to dinner and a movie on a night of their choosing. I'm willing to bet that neither of them has good night vision anymore and may avoid evenings out because of it.

I have the hardest time every year buying for my 92 year-old grandmother likewise. This year we have a newborn so we are doing a professional framed photo for her. I say you should do the album of your own kids, yourself, if they are dragging their feet. Let them know you want all the pics by such and such date, if you don't get them.. then make the album anyways. Good luck.

Time!!! I just lost my 90 year old grandmother on November 16th. I used to go see her a couple of times a week. I would crawl in bed with her and we would just talk. Most of the time it would be the same conversation over and over but it didn't matter. It made her day and mine as well!!!

This year, we got my dad and my father-in-law a 2008 monthly calendar with our own personal pictures for each month. We took past family pics from each season/holiday to assign for each month, and ordered it online. It was about $20.00; my husband did all the technical ordering stuff, but I think it was through Kodak. This is something personal that he can enjoy all next year. (We got this for my f.i.l. last year too, and he loved it.)
If you already have some older pictures of the other family, you wouldn't need to rely on them, and you could get your calendar ordered when you're ready. (If you're interested and want to know the website, e-mail me and I'll get it from my husband.)

I agree with most - time is great. If he lives close, you can get him a family-centric cook book and cook something out of it each week. Get his stories, you'll regret it if you don't!
