What's the best strategy game on the PC?

I am tired of spending money on a game then deleting it a month later. I want something that will take a while to learn, and longer to get tired of, and options for after that if possible. Something with so many choices that even the programmers don't know the perfect strategy for it.

No puzzle games please. And I do not really like real-time games like shooters.

Im not sure if this is up your alley or not.
DOMINIONS 3
Its made by 2 guys, one programmer and one that teaches religio mythology. Its a super deep strategy game with nations that are all based on various mythologies. There are something like 70 nations and they are far from feeling like the same pieces just wearing different uniform colors. They are all very unique and you can find one that fits your playing style (armored, magic, stealth, defensive, horde, whatever). You play their god which is kindof interesting because you give orders but dont directly move the pieces in combat. And sometimes they dont do what you told them to (tho they do tend to have a good reason to change orders)

I agree with you. I have had many games of the same price range that I enjoyed but deleted about a month later. But Dominions 2 lasted for years on my machines and this one looks like it will survive longer than that. It takes almost a year just to try out all of the nations and understand them well enough to know which is your personal power-nation. (then you can go online and play multiplayer, and the game has player-made mods that add more).

You didnt mention which OS but it supports Windows, Mac, and Linux. Its gotten alot of awards and great reviews but I HIGHLY recommend getting the demo before buying it. Its not a game that everyone can get into. This is NOT your daddys chess game and also not going to be popular with the console-game crowd. (oh yeah, and it comes with a 300 page manual!)

Civilization has a long history as being an excellent strategy game. Better yet, it just showed up on GameTap (http://gametap.com)

Or if space conquest is more your speed, check out Galactic Civilizations.

Or if you want a really deep game, try Dominions III. You play a god who's competing with other gods to try to conquer the land, one region at a time. Use magic as well as brute force. Rather reminiscent of the old PC game, Masters Of Magic.

Puzzle...Tomb Raider games always have fun puzzles. Those $20 games are not very good all of the time. You may need to buy a big title.

in case you do not have it already, get the Lords of the section II Siege %.. There are further maps and the AI is greater. you should also get Lordsedit.exe. i am going to e-mail it to you in case you do not have it. It enables you to modify your default castles, default unit limits, and tax rates.
