If you live outside the US, any American is a Yankee. If you live in the American South, anyone from outside the South is a Yankee. If you live outside the South, a Yankee is anyone who lives in the Northeast. If you live in the Northeast, a Yankee is someone from New England. If you live in New England, a Yankee is someone from Maine. And if you live in Maine, a Yankee is someone who eats apple pie for breakfast.

Nebraska isn't a Northern state or a Southern state...We're a Western state!
But in all seriousness, Nebraska was a part of the Union territories during the Civil War whereas Kansas was up in the air as to be either South or North early on before being effectively controlled by the Union during the war.

I suppose it was settled by pioneers from the North. Some of my Pennsylvania relatives settled in eastern Nebraska. Strictly speaking, only the New England states are Yankee states (as people from outside of the south saw it). Some think that "Yankee" comes from the way Indians in Connecticut tried to pronounce the word "English." I think no one knows for sure.

They were part of the North during the civil war, so technically they could be lumped in that way. Depends on where your wife is from though, I'm from oklahoma and don't really consider Nebraska to be a true yankee state.

They were still a territory during the civil war, so I don't think they would qualify as being yankees. They weren't admitted until 1867.

i would say it is not a "yankee" state: it did not exist as a state in the time of the Civil War, it was part of a much larger territory in the west.

BQ: one hundred sixty five votes? that's large! no longer a lot stunned me. manhattan and Cali had the main votes, Yankees and pink Sox had the main votes. a hundred% of Minnesotans suggested the Twins so i'm happy approximately that. BQ2: Delaware likes the Phillies. that's exciting. BQ3: i can't think of of something. large activity.
