I'm 29 weeks pregnant and want to hyphenate my son's last name when he is born. Who's name goes first? The fathers or the mothers?

Typically, it is the mother's name first and then the father's. Jason Smith-Jones.

You could also give your child two middle names and not hyphenate, if you like. For example, Jason Edward Smith Jones. I have several aquaintences who have used this method. It simplifies things for the child (he would typically go by Jason Jones) and also passes along the mother's name.

If you hyphenate your name, I would hyphenate the child's. If you go by your maiden name (as I do) then it wouldn't matter which you choose, you will get questions anyway (trust me). If you took your husband's name, I would use the 2 middle names suggestion. That way, it is more uniform throughout the family.

Good Luck and Congratulations!

Most of the time when you see a hyphenated name, it is the woman who hyphenates and her maiden name goes first and her husband's name goes last. I would guess you would do it the same way for a baby.

Just don't try this in Ohio unless they have finally gotten at least into the 20th century. My brother and his wife wanted a hyphenated last name for their son and were repeatedly told that was impossible to do there.

Really think this over. My mother had a hypenated name and ended up with 2 separate credit reports. Yes, even with one Social Security number. It really messed her up and took a long time to repair.

Otherwise, it is usually the mother' name first then fathers.

Which name you put first is up to you, and if you are doing it for cultural/traditional reasons, on how they do it. Our daughter has two last names, not hyphenated, with my husband's last name first, then my maiden name.

Normally, the mother's name goes first. But if it sounds better the other way, you can do that as well!

Are you married to this guy? If so whos name is dominant in the relation ship? that one goes second. my husband took my last name so his is first and mine second. but what matters is what you like best.
