The Korean War took place from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953. Korea had been divided after World War II, when Japanese control ended. The northern part was occupied by Soviet troops until 1948 and the southern part by Americans until 1949. Efforts to reunify Korea failed, and the divided regions became independent countries. The Korean War began when communist North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950 and captured the capital Seoul. The United Nations Security Council voted to aid South Korea, and the United States led the peacekeeping forces. China and USSR supported North Korea. Although 20 other nations eventually became involved in the war, the Koreans saw it primarily as a civil war between the north and south. The armistice line north of the 38th parallel along the battle line ended the fighting, but Korea has remained divided into North Korea and South Korea for decades since.
THIS IS IT!

The U.S. State Department stupidly announced that South Korea was NOT within the area we were prepared to defend. North Korea promptly invaded. President Truman decided to resist in a "police action" but the Soviets failed to attend a relevant meeting of the UN Security Council and that body took an action declaring the UN to be involved with resisting the North incursion. Thus, although primarily a U.S. action, it wound up merely heading a UN force that fought the North Koreans ( and then, when the Chinese poured across the Yalu River, the Chinese Red Army, as well ).

The new deal/fair deal conservative democrats well represented by Harry Truman took umbrage at Stalin's outspoken communist expansion for world domination and then took a very dim view at the communist North Koreans invasion of South Korea, which geographically is a dagger pointing at the heart of Japan.
The U.S. led the U.N. peace keeping forces in curtailing communist expansion in South East Asia. The U.N. forces, under MacArthur, drove the commies back up North Korea all the way to the Yalu River, which is the natural border with Red China.
MacArthur's plan to do an end-run around the commie Korean Forces at Yalu by going through China without permission (of either Truman or of the Red Chinese) thus eliciting an excited response from Red China.
Six hundred thousand (600,000) screaming Chinamen came pouring over the Chinese/Korean border in six organized divisions in -50 degree below zero weather and drove U.N. forces back down South until the U.N. regrouped, without MacArthur, and stopped the commie horde at the 38th parallel.

Well this is really one reason why: because the communist north illegally invaded South Korea, and the United States, with the support of the United Nations, determined to answer the communist aggression by militarily supporting the government of South Korea. It is also interesting to note that a state of war still exists between these countries because no peace treaty has ever been signed with North Korea.

There was no coherent plan on the part of the United Nations for the Korean peninsula after Japan surrendered. The communists took advantage of the subsequent power vacuum. To their surprise, the UN fought back.

NK wanted to invade SK. they had support from communist china who supplied them with weapons etc. the soviets were reluctant but felt they had to support NK or China would become the communist leader.
NK's invasion was condemned by the US and UN. America intervened immediately - suprising USSR as the US had said they were not interested in SK.
SK were pushed into a little corner of SK, the rest of it being defeated - US and UN troops landed on SK and helped push back NK troops thus the war had began.
