It was not discovered, it was invented. You will hear from some that Al Gore claimed to have done that, but he has been misquoted.

What he said was he opened public access to a system that had been built for the government, and the internet is what happened. He never claimed the invention.

It was actually invented by a collection of individuals. The one who may have had the largest part in the creation of e-mail was probably a man by the name of Ray Tomlinson. Check out this website about him:
