Gasometers are set into a concrete base that is kept full of water. The gasometer is a large screw cup, as gas is pumped into it ,the pressure makes it expand by literally unscrewing itself upwards. As the gas is used and it empties itself it's own weight makes it screw itself down.

it is in two sections and work by gas bein pumped into it under pressure witch send the inside up it a bit like a very large piston when it is full the weight of the inside pushing down keep the gas pressure up to your home if you look at them one day then again a few days later you will see a difference in there hieght
