Two reasons.

1. Its a coating called supertherm, made to reduce interier temps.

2. It is translucent so light can get through.

P.S. Those trucks are like ovens in the back. If its 95 outside the inside cargo area can reach 120 +!!!

I think it's white b/c white reflects the sun. That *dark* brown truck probably absorbs more heat than we care to imagine...and the trucks don't have air condition.
When I was little, my school buses were painted white on top to keep them cooler on the inside - and we actually didn't have numbers painted on top of them.

I didn't notice that! But it's probably because white absorbs the least heat of any color, so it's a way to keep the interior of the truck cooler.

The roof panel is translucent to allow sunlight into the cargo bay. It isn't painted or tinted because that would defeat the purpose.

I'm not sure, but I'll venture to say that like buses, the vehicle's number is painted on top to be seen by helicopters and the number wouldn't show up on a brown background.
