I live on a reservation, and know a great many natives who agree that the system should be abolished. I for one wonder how many times must we pay for the sins of our fore fathers? and is'nt it in the constitution that there shall be no nation within a nation! The tribes use their soverinty when it suits them, Are'nt they also citizens, with the same rights and safeguards as the rest of us, I think we should take a long hard look at removeing the reservation system, or totally revamping it.

That's a good question.I've never experienced "life on the reservation" but if it is indeed that bad, then maybe the Native Americans should step up and start voicing their opinions on removing the reservation system.

That was tried in the 50s and 60s. Natives protested.

Google "Termination" and the Alcatraz takeover.

The problem with taking away a known but limited resource is, what happens if the new situation is worse? There are pluses and minues on either side. Right now, natives are free to come and go as they please from the reservations; a number work in urban centers. They can partake in either location. But the ones who feel stuck on reservations may of course disagree.... but would they automatically fare better if forced off of a reservation? Perhaps reserve-based economies need to be the focus, allowing skills and training, whether one lives on or off reserve. But such a system in my opinion would need to be one created by and tailered for natives, not imposed, to be accepted and functional.

They should never have been set up in the first place! The land was yours and then the darned white man came and as usual took over. I am white, but I absolutely detest what was done to you. It is of little use to say this, but I am so so sorry for what we did to you. Yes, I agree, the reservations should be torn apart! By the way, what sins did your or others tribes commit? If my memory serves me correctly you were only trying to protect your land and your people by the only means available to you. Never apologize for protecting your own.
