I just don't get it. I know she has a rags to riches story and had a harsh childhood, but what is the deal?

Because shes marketed well! i mean like you say shes that typical rags to riches story! she deals with issues on her show that affect everyday people in their everday lives and she offers inspiration! Oprah is marketed to be this down to earth woman who, even though she has all this money and power, is still like every other woman in the world with the same struggles...not strictly true, i know she has struggles but its not the same as others really! if you look at her roadtrips with Gale it was again putting her in a situation which people experience everyday. it was made to look just like any normal roadtrip but think of all the crew she must have had etc. I personally love Oprah but ultimatley she's a cleverly marketed empire and also seriously inspirational!! Because much of America can associate with her. She is overweight, not particularly attractive, wasn't raised in affluence, and practical without having high intelligence. Common folk, naturally 'want' to idolize her , because they can see similarities with themselves. There is nothing positively unusual about Oprah, and her rise to fame, is largely due to an effort exploit a 'rags to riches' persona.

Oprah is never philanthropic without a lot of fanfare. If she gives her money away, she makes sure that everyone knows about it. And all those gifts given on her show are provided by advertisers - which receive acknowledgment.
Sorry if I seem a little less than enthused about Oprah.
I personally think she is very self serving.
So go ahead and give me the Thumbs Down now. I'm wearing my helmet.

Well when you have a baby and stay at home there isn't much choice during Oprah's time slot. I mean imagine watching Barney all day...you have to have a LITTLE for yourself, but it can't be something that will turn your baby into a little psychopath. So you just listen to Oprah blabbering...hey it's better than "Do your ears hang low" for the 1000th time. I guess some women just get used to watching it. There you go...mystery unraveled....

I haven't the vaguest idea. I personally find her to be insufferable. Honestly, I believe the roots of her popularity initially were her unique combination of all that is generally discriminated against in society, a poor, black, obese female. I think the average viewer just wanted her to succeed and succeed she did. Anymore I think she has prostituted her ideals to rich buddies and furthering the profits of her minions. Her topics are insipid and range from the ridiculously ethereal to downright trite. I can usually watch about 2 minutes until I feel my stomach tighten and my brain shut down. Just one person's opinion.

I don't watch her show, but I admire her good intentions in trying to help people improve their lives. And she is someone who has worked her way up and earned her position. Anytime someone is trying to put positive vibes out into the world, they should be congratulated.

Because she is actually a very intelligent person who likes to share her wealth. I think a lot of us would like to think that we'd give back to the community like she does, if we had that kind of money.

All I like about her is that she proves that anyone can change their place in society if they put the hard work through.
