This is the first time that I'm going to be at a hotel with my laptop. They say that they only have dial-up. What do I need to do and what should I bring along so I can still be hooked up to the net?

Bring a telephone cord to connect, provided your laptop modem has dial up capabilities, or upgrade to a better hotel.
If you have a wireless card internal or external bring it, most coffee shops have WiFi access, also most big office buildings, and maybe even the restaurant down the street. If your going to any major US city you are only a few moments away from hi speed access thru WiFi.

Country Inns and Econo Lodge both provide WiFi access and the place is inexpensive. Get a WiFi card

Your laptop probably came with a dial-up modem so all you need is a phone cable.
