find out for yourself.
stop asking this redundant question.
if anybody truly knew, why on earth would they be wasting time here (on yahoo answers, on yahoo, on the world wide web period), when instead they could be LIVING LIFE TO IT'S FULLEST?
& all those people who say "42", we get it already. if you truly loved "HITCHIKERS GUIDE", i would hope you were smart enough to STOP KILING THAT JOKE!

just go out & live, exprience, & learn. we do not have the answer to this question because we are still trying to find out ourselves!

The meaning of life is subjective, it all depends on what you believe. There is too much that is unknown to have a set truth that does not involve some sort of faith. So just go with what you think is right or makes the most sense and that can be your meaning, right or wrong what truly matters is the inner peace it can bring.

This question is asked almost every day; use the Answers search box for tons of answers.

From the novel "Steppenwolf," by Hermann Hesse, "Man is not by any means of fixed and enduring form. He is much more an experiment and a transition. He is nothing else than the narrow and perilous bridge between nature and spirit. His innermost destiny drives him on to the spirit and to God. His innermost longing draws him back to nature, the mother. Between the two forces his life hangs tremulous and irresolute.
"That man is not yet a finished creation but rather a challenge of the spirit; a distant possibility dreaded as much as it is desired; that the way towards it has only been covered for a very short distance and with terrible agonies and ecstasies even for those few for whom it is the scaffold today and the monument tomorrow—all this is the Steppenwolf.
"As for the way to true manhood, the way to the immortals, he has, it is true, an inkling of it and starts upon it now and then for a few hesitating steps and pays for them with much suffering and many pangs of loneliness. Unwilling to suffer all these sufferings and to die all these deaths, he shuts his eyes. He is resolved to forget that the desperate clinging to the self and the desperate clinging to life are the surest way to eternal death, while the power to die, to strip one's self naked, and the eternal surrender of one's self bring immortality with them."

I had to answer this question to say one thing. I have been on Y/A for a while. I have seen many people ask many questions about the meaning, the purpose, and the philosophy of life. I admit that I have not read every answer that has been posted to these questions.

However, In all of that time, and in all of my reading, I have never read such a coherent, meaningful and thorough exploration of an answer as r0ck3t3r just gave. I dunno, maybe he just got lucky. Maybe he just happen to consider a new way of thinking about it for himself. Maybe he had that idea since birth or even just thought it up as he was typing it. But I will say one thing. I have finally seen a real justification for someone asking this question.

r0ck3t3r, I bow to your answer.

In order for there to be a meaning, there had to be a designer. If you were to raise a chicken from the egg, so that when it grew up you could eat it, then that chickens purpose was to provide nourishment for you. This is your meaning of life for the chicken. This however is not the chickens purpose of life for himself. So I ask you this.... Do you want to know your meaning of life for yourself, or do you want to know your makers meaning of life for you? Those things do not always equal. From what perspective are you asking this question? If it is from your earthly maker, you can ask your parents why they had you? If it is from a deeper religious perspective, you have to search for God and find your meaning there. If it for yourself, then you have to figure out what your goals are, for that would be your meaning here in this life...

Oh man, ever since this morning, when I saw a bumper sticker that made me laugh, I have been waiting for someone to ask this question again.

Okay, my stock answer is... Only you can determine the meaning of life for you.

According to the bumper sticker:

Life is all about a**:
covering it, kicking it, kissing it, and getting it.

Firstly, define the word 'meaning'. This smacks of predeterminism: I meant to make that sandwich. I plan it I construct it. I eat it. (yum)
I suppose if you believe in god(s) this would allow for such a thing. In reality though, life has no 'meaning' as it just happens.

Every life is different, and so the purpose of every life is different also. I've found that the purpose of life in general is to serve God.

I belive that life has no meaning, and we should take the time to stop pondering about it and just have fun with it, beacause its just too short to waste away.
