i know you's are wondering why i want to know well because i think it can be done but a mate of mine reckons you can't.

Oh yea. There are multiple things that can happen to your motherboard that will make it completely dead.

One of em - burned circuitry. If you give it more power than it can handle - it will die and never come back up :).

If your North Bridge dies ... ehh, you can repair it, I guess, but it will be a major pain and definitely not worth the money or effort.

The small can aluminum electrolytic capacitors can leak fluid over the board and corrode some of the copper traces. I've seen this happen quite a few times.

It is easy, I have done it many times! Putting the wrong voltage on one is very effective for instance. Letting it overheat is also very effective. Bending it too much alos works, over tighthening the nuts is fun as well!!

Electrical surge can fry it, moisture can fry it, animal getting inside the case can fry it, to name a few.

yes, an unstable voltage supply will...
avoid using the comp if you r using some kind of generator.
it happen to me when i was in indonesia..
