I am guessing people are actually referring to the '72 season, because ND won the national championship in '73...The correct answer is '84...

In 1973 Michigan had a 10-0-1 record tied for 1st in their conference and was ranked as so: AP - No. 6, UPI - No. 6
I don't think ESPN is right.
The correct answer is 1984 Michigan was 6-6 and I can't seem to find Notre Dames record, but I did find the national rankings and Notre Dame is not in it.
