With small ones in the home, it is best to save some of the cleaning for when they are napping or asleep at night. Not much point in picking up toys during the day. Keep up with laundry daily or at least every other day. Clean up dishes after each meal while the kids play. It's better than having two sink loads after dinner time. Don't attempt to be Martha Stewart. It isn't necessary and the kids won't suffer from it. Enjoy your children and clean when you can. Mostly it's simply picking up the clutter that makes a home appear clean. Save the major cleaning for when your significant other is home. S(he) can entertain the kids while you clean bathrooms, etc. Or you entertain the kids while s(he) cleans. You don't need all the toys out...put some away for a while, then recycle. The kids will think they are new. To give your home the appearance of tidiness...reduce the amount of clutter in your home. Get rid of unnecessary items that mostly collect dust.

I am not a stay at home mom but I have a schedule to cleaning....during the day when I am at home I put things away and give the house a neat appearence....on wednesdays I start washing cause by friday there is a lot of clothes between the four of us....mostly now cause its getting colder....but i try to keep the house neat in case someone comes over...it doesnt have to be pristeen but as long as there isnt clothes everywhere or dishes in the sink...on fridays I clean the bathroom and mop all the floors and wipe down the walls with a clorox water mix or the clorox cleanup...I painted the walls with semigloss latex paint so I could wipe them down..... I have two little ones...they love to touch the walls.

my cleaning schedule goes like this:
wake up then clean wasn't cleaned before bed
breakfast then clean
lunch then clean
dinner then clean
before bed I clean again
: ) sorry I'm of no help. I'm a stay at home mother of a 16 month old and soon to get pregnant again.
i am constantly cleaning though when I'm not playing with my son. there are always dishes, laundry, crumbs on the floor, dusting to be done, kitty litter needing changing or sweeping up, toys all over and now leaves are coming in! If i don't constantly clean then I feel dirty. I just feel better when everything is kept clean.

I never let it build up. I keep the house picked up, so no job gets too big to complete in a short time. Messes travel quick in a house that is lived in. I just keep them contained, clean and manageable. If I keep the jobs small, I just do them. No motivation necessary. Unfortunately, the hard part is the organization and initialization of the cleaning regimen. If you start with the daily chores and make them manageable, then you can organize the rest (weekly, monthly, seasonal) as time and energy permits. It works best when you have family needs that demand your time. This is how I got time for me.

i taught my 4 yr old daughter how to mop, make her bed, clean the trash can, and clean her room. and i clean other things while she's doing that. it's great bonding. it teaches them how to work, and she gets $1 every saturday for it. sounds cheap, but she is so excited to get it. then once every couple of months, we go to target to pick out a toy for $8 or less, and she pays for it herself. it usually becomes her favorite toy, because she knows how and why she got it.
