I interviewed with both in College. The CIA does like history majors - it's hard to understand and process intelligence information if you don't have a background about the society and culture (and that culture's history) that the intelligence eminates from.
The CIA does "hire" other types of people too, more on a contract basis than say as an "agent". If you are in the right position to feed them information on something they want to know about (e.g. you are in an organization that they want to infiltrate) they may well pay you - I'm not sure I would call this being "hired" by the CIA.
The CIA sitting up and taking notice of your computer skills and hiring you is a nice thought, but it seems to smake more of a movie plot than reality. By and large, that just doesn't happen. Maybe, upon rare occasion, someone get caught hacking into somewhere, and some government agancy may say to them - you can come hack for us, or you can go to jail. But that's more fantasy too. They can teach someone how to hack - they can't teach you to be trustworthy, and there's already evidence to the contrary.
FBI is a totally different ball of wax. They too like college graduates. They have been known to like candidates wtih some law enforcement experience too.
I think you want someone to tell you "you don't have to go to college to get one of these jobs", but the fact is, by and large, you do. If you really want this kind of a job, you'll have to buckle down and study like mad and make it through. If you are exremely smart, you can make college work. All you need is disipline. Frankly, neither the CIA nor the FBI is going to hire you if you don't have that.

My ex-wife was recruited by the CIA because she had a degree in Library Science, and they need that type of skill. She refused them, but it just goes to show that the CIA and FBI do recruiting. Plenty of law enforcement people would probably love to work for the FBI - its a prestigious position, despite the history of abuses by some of its members, including J. Edgar Hoover. The FBI has done a lot more good than harm, and the "bad guys" eventually get found out and thrown out... usually.

I would think they would tend to look in the military as well. Much of military planning and execution is based on intelligence. College, as well, is a good place, but I think if you were able to ask, you would probably find out that most CIA have a military background. I do not think anything you type on a home computer is going to impress anyone. (Sound lazy to me) Go to college and take courses that would appeal to one or the other and do well in them. Besides, I dont think being an agent of any kind is based purely on being "smart".

FBI/CIA Recruiters at colleges or other goverment jobs, or people who just submited applications through the proper channels. If you try to show off your skills illegally, then I highly doubt that the FBI will show up at your doorstep with a job offer. Chances are that the only thing they'll want to give you is handcuffs, and relocate you to a prison cell.

There's a whole applicaton process. Their websites discuss the entire process. I was looking into the FBI a few years ago. Lots of requirements. Anyway, they don't just ask people to join.

Believe it or not, they advertise in the newspapers with just an ordinary add. They don't say it's the Government. You may only discover that upon 2nd and 3rd interviews.
Oh, I wasn't suppose to tell!

That's a good point. However they do it, it is very secretive. I think they'd choose someone who has been a police officer for sometime and is very good at their job
