I'm a sociology student doing some research on social networking technology trends and their adoption and usage patterns in modern society, specifically the United States.

When I do a standard Google search, I often get a lot of sites and articles from the UK.

While I certainly value the wealth of information available from the United Kingdom, the culture there is slightly different than the US, and such information is, quite frankly, irrelevant to my research.

I know there are search options to limit the results to English only, but is there a feature for 'US Only'?

(and yes, my regional settings in windows are correct).

It's not as easy as it is for other regions but I believe there is a method. I have often wondered why as there is a "view results only from UK" option in the google search engine.

It is a bit long but possible. First, go to advanced preferences (http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en) Then scroll down to
"RegionSearch pages located in:" It will usually be set to "any region".
Find United states and select it.
Make sure you type in your search at the top before pressing enter as google tends to undo changes each time you refresh the page. Good luck.

ANOTHER METHOD
Go to this page and replace "PUT YOUR SEARCH OPTION HERE" with the keywords you would like to search for. http://www.google.com/search?as_q=PUT+YOUR+SEARCH+OPTION+HERE&hl=en&num=10&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&lr=&cr=countryUS&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_qdr=all&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=&as_rights=&safe=images

A good way to check if it is working is to search for a uk site such as the bbc. When set to search only us sites, the first result will be a wikipedia article on the bbc and not the uk bbc site. E.g. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&cr=countryUS&as_qdr=all&q=bbc&btnG=Search

Only by putting USA or United States in as one of the search items and using advanced search to require all the terms.
This is why it is called research instead of looking things up, judgement is required. Imagine if you had to do it all in the library hauling the books to a desk or chair.

You'd think it'd be a simple URL job. It isn't!

I just had a look around on the forums & came across this one:

http://www.webmasterworld.com/google/3321575.htm

Some suggest using a proxy server, don't know what your thoughts are on that one.

Hope it helps anyway.

You could always put "United States" NOT "United Kingdom"
