Magnetic tape is usually used for backup purposes. Thus, for this application the primary motivation for using tape is cost. A typical backup tape setup uses anywhere from 5-20 tapes (one for every day of the week, then weekly backups for a month, then monthly backups for a year, and I've even seen yearly backups as far back as 5 years). When you get to that level of storage, using hard drives just isn't economically feasible.

Really depends on the length of time your wanting to store your data. My line of business we archive for 30 years and use magnetic tapes. Although this is borderline retarded as in 15 years the technology, IF the tape are even readable as they degrade over time, to retrieve the data will be long gone so you'll have to ship it some place to read the data. but HDD can be expensive for long term archiving. So its about money and time. If you only need a short term solution hard drive RAID SAN solution is the way to go.

It's done all the time for archival backup.
It's cheaper than a hard drive, but slower.

No because it degrades over time making the data corrupt!
