No, I do not believe it because most animals are NOT totally colorblind, not sure who is saying they are. Birds actually see color better than humans.

The test is simple. You determine what an animal is able to see first by training it to do a same different task (this can be done in many ways). Then you provide it with 2 different colors that have the same shade (let's say red and green at the same saturation). They appear different to colored animals, but the same to those who cannot see color. What they will see is the same shade of grey.
If they choose same, you have your answer.
It's all how you ask the question, not the question you ask.
There is also the physiological way which is examining the eyes and they're corresponding neural network. To see color you actually need cones, a different structure from rods which is the structure that allows us to see black, white and shades of grey.
You would be interested to learn that birds are capable of distinguishing more colors than humans and that New World monkeys are missing one set of cones allowing them to see the world very differently than humans. Stretch your imagination.

They can actually tell what animals see. There are two different types of light receptors in the eyes, rods and cones. Cones see color and rods only see black and white. If the animal has no cones, then they are color blind. They can even tell the colors they are sensitive to. Most animals have some color vision but few have as good color vision as humans.

Yup, it depends on the animal. The research greatly has to do with research into the anatomy of the eye and knowing what the physiology of that structure is. As well, MANY animals use bright colours such as red and orange as warnings to other animals, if the predators could not detect red or orange there would be no reason for those colours to be used. Obviously there are animals to see colour.
What use does a mole have for seeing colour? Probably not a lot. Does a bird of prey see colour? Most likely, their eye sight is far superior to our own.

No. Horses are not color blind. The rods and cones in their eyes are adjusted to where some colors look the opposite of what they are [ such as red can appear green] and some appear grey. But horses can see most colors. Their vision is very blurry though. Their hearing is what the use to perceive their environment the most.

It totally depends on the animal, of course. Some can see some colors, some can see things we DON'T see, some can NOT see colors -- and yes, there are experiments that can prove it. Until you read HOW the research is done, you should not dismiss it off-hand.

What I believe has nothing to do with it
The eye has to have both rods and cones for a mammal to see in colour.
If it has both, it sees in colour.
If it doesn't , it doesn't.
Insects are different and I do not know how their eyes work

There is no doubt that deer don't see orange. I can sit in a drab forest with bright hunter orange and they will not notice me unless I move. Hunter orange stands out brightly in a winter forest , yet the deer will walk right by and not notice.

bravo and rosie know what there on about. the rest are chatting ****. animals can tell the difference between colour because the animal sees the shade not the tone. so red is a very dark shade of black. while yellow is a light shade of black.
