if refers to how ugly the 1/2 penny was in comparison (50% less). The last 1/2 cent the US produced was in 1857 and at that time a whole penny was pretty compared to today.

In the older days when money was not so plentiful, a penny was actually worth something monetarily, & it was considered a lot of money to spend. So when Mom & Dad would send in their children to get someting for themselves at the store, when they would come out Dad would ask, "what did you get & how much did it cost?" The children wold then begin to reveal pocket fulls of candy & such, & Dad woud reply, "That must have cost a "pretty penny"!
Now, when I say that to you, I'm remembering those nostalgic days, & I'm thinking about how beautiful you are & how much you are worth to me, so I ask "How's my Pretty Penny!!!!"
Have a great day!!!

I thought the Sharks were gonna lose 6-1 after that awful first period. They pulled it together, but I definitely wouldn't say they dominated. Unless the Wings become the 3rd team in history to come back from a 0-3 deficit, the Sharks will take the series, but I don't see a comeback happening.

Pretty has several meanings beside 'pleasing to the eye.' It also means 'considerable'. We say 'pretty ugly' for example! So it has nothing to do with the ppearance of said penny, it refers to the fact that there were a considerable amount of pennies.

I'm 45 and people have been saying that expression forever. I don't know who, pardon me, *coined* the phrase, but it when someone says, "I like your new shoes" and they say, "Well, they were a pretty penny!" it just means that they spent a lot on the shoes.
