The first music video is debatable.

Although "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles was the first to air on MTV, artists had been making short promotional films to accompany singles since the late 60s. Often these were live performance videos though although. Later, videos began to be structured like show art films. There were TV shows specializing in music videos (usually British) years before MTV began playing them 24 hours/day.

"Paperback Writer" by the Beatles may have been one of the first to qualify as a music video by modern standards. I haven't done any research on this though. It's possible that there are earlier examples.

Edit: To clarify, the Buggles' video again was NOT the first music video. It was the first to be played on MTV, an American 24 hour video cable channel.

The first video ever played on MTV was "Video killed the Radio Star". Not sure who sings it, though.
