They hate Cayenne Pepper. I usually use comet cleanser. They won't crawl through it.

Ummm it's pretty important to know whether you have children or pets before you can determine how to get rid of pests, and asking here isn't probably the best place. I'd call a profesional if at all possible. If not you need to tell us who and what else besides the pests are in your household before knowing what to do
and i wouldn't do as someone suggested and put the "covered poison" under a refriderator where the following could happen -- moisture from the refridgerator could drip, someone may spill something. No big deal if it's an adult but we all know how kids are. in locked cabinets is the only safe place even for covered poison. No poison is COVERED because if it was the insects couldn't get to it, although yes i understand that's how it's labeled.
Even a thorough cleaning will leave enough crumbs for ants to survive that won't eliminate them but will help in the future when you rid the current ones. Unless you are moving the stove refridgerator, dishwasher, and shelves I don't see how you can remove every last bit of food by cleaning.

I have found the cheap little ant baits that they sell at Walmart (or pretty much anywhere, really) work fine for getting rid of ants. They under $5 for a pack of them. The poison is covered, so it would be hard for kids to inadvertantly ingest it, but I suggest tucking the baits under and behind things like the AC and fridge to limit access to them.
Try to place the bait traps in the ants path. Ants leave a scent trail to lead other ants from the colony to whatever food source they have found. If you can find where they are getting in the house and place a trap there, they will then carry the poison back to the colony and kill the other ants, too.
It usually takes a couple of days to a week before you stop seeing ants. Once that happens, clean the areas they traveled through with cleanser to destroy the scent trails so other ants don't "follow in their footsteps."
Good Luck.

Ants become a nuisance when they enter homes. Instead of spending money on costly pest control, you can get rid of ants by removing the food source and using soap water.

The ants are there for only one reason. They have found food to eat. With children, it is understandable that there are crumbs or a forgotten piece of candy that is out of site, but something is attracting them.
The cheapest thing I can think of is to do a complete and thorough cleaning of affected areas in your home.
