I am guessing that you mean "Life on the Mississippi" by Mark Twain. Interestingly the role of the Mississippi River as a great transportation route and a transport for news and culture was significant for a relatively short period of time in the 19th century. Cities all along the river were connected by the constant flow of the stern wheelers traveling the tricky river changes. Hence there was adventure, danger romance and even news and culture that was disseminated. people and places a great distance away were tied closely together by the constant river travel. Whole towns depended upon the river traffic for their very existence. Unfortunately this period lasted only about 80 years. We are fortunate to have such a wonderful writer as Twain to be able to keep it alive in our imagination.
