Both, I guess. Well, I prefer headphones because then I'd have some privacy. But when I feel rather down, I'd choose the speaker (or better yet, the subwoofer). so, my answer is both.

Speakers, for the best sound quality, if you can afford them and your circumstances permit
But
If you have neighbors you might annoy, if you like to listen at strange times, if you can't afford good peakers - then get good headphones. Big enough to fit over your ears with comfort, many good models have their own controls - and if you can afford them, Bose makes about the best around. If you can't afford that, compare some of the lower priced models of sound canceling units.
Shop - try them know - and know what you are looking for, both in terms of quality and price

Well both ..I use my headphones when I am at school ..and I use them when I am walking, and when everyone is sleepin at night. And I blast my speakers after school n' stuff ..haha with full bass all the way ..my neighbors came complaining like ..twice ..haha. So yea ..
