Ok so from my ignorant perspective I think these two would be the best options, but as mentioned I know very little about them. I know different kinds of welders are better for different kinds of welding, and mostly what he would be doing is fabrication for cars and trailers etc. Would either of these two work for that purpose, would he need any extra equipment(such as gas whatever those big tanks are ussually attached to the welders), and would either of these two be even worth it?( I know they're on the really low end of pricing for welders, but thats the only reason I considered getting him one was because I don't have to spend $1000 to get him one...

the one you want to get should be set up for gas and have the regulator...he can buy the tank later if he wants it..
to do good automotive work he will want the option of switching to gas later..
so the 2nd one is the one to get
Lincoln and miller both make good inexpensive machines

The Lincoln Electric MIG is going to be the most practical for your father. Lincoln makes a great welder (from the smallest to the biggest) and it should provide him years of dependable service. The MIG is also very versatile, he can weld most types of metal with no problems.

It's also well suited for automotive work and trailer construction. If he doesn't have welding gloves and a mask you may want to consider that as well....or recommend it to someone else for purchase.

The price is right as well. The big tanks you see are used more often on heavy grade steel, galvanized steel, etc. If he's doing body work, light to medium fabrication on auto stuff, and tube frame trailers the Lincoln should be more than sufficient. I have run a similar Lincoln gasless unit for years now. It's not perfect for every job but is a good value for what it's worth.

Hope this helps!

I do alot of welding at our shop. That is thoughtful to get him a welder and I looked at both of them you posted. If you want an honest answer, which I think you would, I wouldn't reccomend either of them. Any welder under 600.00 is not gonna do too well. If he takes pride in his welding, he doesn't want a bottom of the line welder that is gasless. I would suggest looking for a wire feed with gas, you should be able to find them starting in the 5-600 dollar range and up. Good luck.

Both are good MIG welders. Good for fabrication. Buy it and if its not what he needs he can exchange it for what he needs.
