Rather than plain performance, which could get costly with varying degree of results (and may hurt the reliability of the car); I'd recommend that you look at the improving the basics for handling dynamics first.

Handling is after all one of BMW's special characteristics; whereas you can put a big engine in any car to get higher power; but with lousy handling.

With good handling, you will enjoy your car much more without the need for more power. Especially for the 328is.

Look at installing a strut tower bar/brace. Prices have come down since the E36 no longer is a current model.

Next, a car this old must need new struts and shocks. Choose from either stock items (Sach) to upgraded ones (Bilstein).

After that, look at the wheels. If they are still the stock 15", you might want to upgrade to some 17" ones. I wouldn't go more than 17" for your car. Bigger wheels may look "cool" for some, but are totally impractical (will be bent in no time) and actually hurt performance due to the extra weight.

Once these are done, consider dressing the car up with a BMW factory M-kit. This consists of front/rear bumpers, side skirts. You can go a step more with M3 mirrors. I only recommend BMW factory upgrades for bodykits. Others can make the car look really tacky.

You may then look at replacing the old spark plugs, cables and coils. Bavarian Autosport has some nice coil sets. Put in some nice platinum plugs. Use only synthetic oil & premium gas.

Your car should feel nice and sharp.

Install BMW M70 V12 engine, and mount 6 speed ZF transmission pulled from BMW 540. You will not have any space to add forced induction, but horse power you get would be more than any BMW.

For real, the best you fan do is to install Euro spec E36 M3 engine and then super charge it. But heck, why go though that trouble? you can fly do Germany and import the Euro spec M3 as a gray market car.

Buy a car with better performance (like an M3 or a Ford Mustang). You will be more satisfied in the long run and it will probably be cheaper too.

BMW spent millions of dollars making sure your car would have good performance and reliability. Don't expect to have significant gains in performance without severely affecting reliability. BMW parts are expensive.

Performance isn't cheap, don't expect to stick some fancy air filter on and spin the wheels in third, it ain't gonna happen! Actually, some aftermarket air filters hamper performance as they suck in warm air from the engine bay as opposed to cooler ambient air from the front of the car as it is designed.
Best bang for buck would be Vortech supercharger. Don't try any of those stupid electric ones, they are useless.
Cheaper maybe a chip, Exhaust header, wilder cam and remap. one HP costs about £10.00 in terms of outlay for return.

Start with the basics, K&N filter, cold air induction, header with sport exhaust. The maybe performance tune with a chip.
