If you are looking for reliablility, don't buy a BMW in the first place; however, I have not seen any studies to convince me that one 5-series model is more reliable than another. The 1998 (E39 chassis) was the last year before the third generation M5 was realeased as a 1999 model. The best 1998 model would be the 540i, with a 286 horsepower 4398 cc (4.4 litre) V8, it outpowered the measly 528 which only had 193 horsepower. The 1998 was availible with a 6-speed manual trasmission (or a 4-speed slushbox). If you are in the market for a 1998 5-series, reliablilty is irrevelent because no 5-series is truly a reliable car so just buy the best prerfoming car (540i) and don't give a second thought to lesser cars such as the 528i.

BMW 528i with manual transmission
M50 series of engines are more reliable than V8 M60. Less problems are expected and is easier to repair.

For that year, your other choice is 540i.

528i with Sports Package would be my pick.

The M52 (6 cylinder) engine platform has been very successful across the model range and has been highly regarded by reviewers; and even won various awards.

Just on the basis of fewer movng parts, the inline 6 engines would be more reliable and cheaper to maintain than the V8 engine.
