We see what we want to see, plain and simple. We can read anything into anything. It's all about interpretation....this is what is so wonderous about our imaginations and brains.
I say believe what you want to believe about the song, don't let others tell you otherwise.

Hi Andy,
I think that it's probably just what you (& many of the answers here) think. The only other story I remember hearing years later, is that it is about smoking pot.
That "story" probably came about because the song came out during the hippie era, in the mid to late 1960's.
Speaking for myself, I'm just like you & so are many other people. We all wish for the peace & the wonderful optimistic hope of childhood.
I don't think we wish to be that young again, but we certainly wish that this world would QUIT being so incredibly negative & bleak for so many of its inhabitants.
There's no reason why adulthood shouldn't live up to those childhood dreams of happiness. We're just too busy fighting wars we shouldn't even BE in, sending our elderly & disabled to the poor house, and making life one big struggle, rather than the great joy that it should be.
Maybe that explains why (especially now) we keep referring to the "hereafter" as where we can find eternal peace & happiness. We sure aren't getting it here on earth!

It's just a tale about a dragon and a boy who grows up. Any other interpretations are by people who look to much into everything. People say that certain things are symbols of some type. They don't ever stop to think, Hey maybe the writer of this song just felt like writing about a boy growing up with no symbolic meaning or anything.

The song tells a bittersweet story of the ageless dragon Puff and his playmate Jackie Paper, a little boy who grows up and loses interest in the imaginary adventures of childhood and leaves Puff alone and depressed. The story of the song takes place "by the sea" in the fantasy land of Honah Lee.

there are many children's songs that have hidden meaning. Ring around the Rosy was about children in the early 1900's that had roseola and their bodies were burned in incinerators. 'ashes, ashes we all fall down. very sad.
Puff the magic dragon is about a pot smoking Little boy who has illusions of Puff.
Afternoon Delight, song from the 70's was not about a picnic, it was about an 0rg*.
many inuindos in songs
