Yes, it's illegal and might constitute "criminal damage to property."

In CA, you are required to notify the owner and authorities of damage over $500. If what you did was indeed an accident, and the damage does not exceed $500, then what you did was technically OK. However, if the damage was intentional, you may be charged with vandalism (CA Penal Code Section 594 et seq...)

Yes its called vandalism . It wouldn't have been had you left a note or waited for the owner, but how do you accidentally scratch a car with your keys ?

You can't get in trouble if they can't find out who did it. The reality is that they'll either be cursing the unknown jackass who keyed their car, or they might not even notice it till some time later.

But keying a car is indeed a crime, it's destruction of property/vandalism.

If you forgot about it and if know one saw you I think if you know the person or if you see them agian you should pay for it imagine if someone keyed your car by accident wouldn't you want them to pay for it.

Intentional scratching is indeed illegal, that's vandalism. What you did was an mere accident, no biggie.

If it was accidental, no, it's not illegal. But you should tell the person and let your insurance take care of it if they need to get it fixed. If you purposely did it, then it would be illegal (defacing/destroying/damaging private property).

It's considered vandalism. However, being an accident I wouldn't sweat it. We all get dings and scratches and stuff.
