VW 1600 backfires?

I have a '74 model 1600 in a dune buggy which it don't wanna idle and as it's revved up it backfire's thru the exhaust.......i'm thinking stuck valve.......any other views? Carb has been rebuilt too.

Very much sounds like a stuck valve. Do a compression test.
If not a bad valve check your timing. Points may be burned or point gap is not correct. Could be running to much spark advance.
