I'd go with the new yanmar, the v.p. may have severe rust in the water jackets, unless you are going to do the repairs yourself you will end up with a lot of expense and still have a 30 yr old engine

You could completely rebuild your 30 year old engine, but you are still going to end up with a 30 year old engine.
In a lot of cases, and from personal experience, rebuilding a 30 year old engine is false economy.
Also a new modern engine is good for resale value.

you may want to ask this question to the marine surveyor who will be doing your survey (assuming you will be getting a survey?) the surveyor will have enough information after looking at the engine in question to help you make this decision. just because it is 30 yrs old doesnt mean it is bad, you just need to look at it, have a professional look at it and then you can see better what your options are. good luck!
