The neighbourhood around Angel Underground Station is called Islington and is a very popular area for shopping and eating out. Radiating from the station is Upper Street with a huge number of restaurants featuring every cuisine imaginable; nearby is Chapel Market a traditional working class (blue collar) street market selling fruit and vegatables. Behind this is a modern shopping mall with a large multiplex cinema and a huge Borders book shop. Off Upper Street there is also a famous weekend antiques market and passageways full of antique shops and small food shops; a farmers' market is also held regularly in the area. Islington is a cosmopolitan vibrant area - one of the best in London in which to live.

"Angel" is a shortened version of the more correct name "The Angel, Islington" because the station is named after a public house (The Angel) in the Islington area of London.

Twenty years ago, Islington would have been regarded as one of the down-trodden areas of London. But, these days, there has been a resuregence in the area and it is becoming a well-sought out area.

Islington. The area immediately around the station is called Angel. It's a very busy area with lots of bars, restaurants, shops. Generally very safe so long as you're sensible, as there's always crowds of people around, even in the early hours of the morning. 24-hour bus service runs through it, too.
