I have a small pin hole leak on my radiator so I am trying to add a bottle of "Stop Leak" and some coolant, however, I struggled, finally got the cap to twist, but it won't come off. There are two notches on either side where the cap is attached to the radiatior , but I can't get the cap to slip over these notches. HELP! It is a '98 Dodge Neon. It has been sitting over night so I know it is cool enough to remove the cap. Thanks for your help!

You need to push down while turning the second half, it is designed this way so that you can release the pressure and not melt your face off. now that you have it half way just push downward on it and then turn it the rest of the way off and it will come right off. good luck with the stop leak, make sure that you refill your radiator with more anti-freeze as soon as you put in the stop leak, then run it for about a half hour and it should stop leaking.

Push down on the cap and twist. You have to push hard while twisting. You most likely have not turned the cap all the way. There are two "stops" when you twist, one will allow pressure to release, the other will allow the cap to come off. This is a safety feature so that people do not have the cap fly off and get scalded when they try to open a hot radiator.

You will want to get the radiator replaced as soon as possible. Running a Neon with low coolant can cause head gasket failure, even if the engine does not overheat!

Push HARD straight down on the cap with the palm of your hand and turn the cap counter clockwise. (There's a stiff spring underneath the cap.) STOP LEAK products are only temporary at best. Fix or replace the radiator.

Wait until the car is completely cooled off and then turn the radiator cap will pressing down.

On Mythbusters, they used a raw egg in the radiator to stop the leak.

It appears that your aware that you do not want to open a "hot" radiator, you will be scalded.
Black pepper can also be used to stop radiator leaks.
If your car over heats, leave the car running when adding water, or you will crack your block.
If the engine is cool, car has not been running, then have at it.
Push down hard on cap and turn counter clock wise

Everyone else has got the right idea as per the cap but if i may make one little suggestion, DO NOT USE STOP LEAK. It will eventually clog your coolant system as well as take out your water pump, no good. Call a junkyard and buy a radiator or try 1-800-radiator.

The fitting has tabs and the tabs have an lip that catches. You need to push downward while rotating the cap (sort of like medicine bottles.) Once it is loose you need to pull straight up give the age of the vehicle the rubber ring on the underside may be getting stuck. You just need to pull up a little harder and it should come free. You should also think about replacing the cap.

Good Luck.

STOP. You should have a reservoir to add fluid. I would not add any stop leak as this can have some bad side affects like clogging up small passages in your engine.

Take it to a shop and have them look at it.

But to remove the cap you turn it until it hits the tabs then you push down and turn some more it should then just pop off.

Replace the radiator. "stop leak" is for temporary fix, but could make problem worse. if that thing clogs cylinder head coolant circulation hole, you would be looking at $1500 cylinder head rebuilt. Radiator can be fixed with few hundred bucks. This would be cheaper route in long run. Proceed only if you are planning dumping the car in next 3 months.
