I say, "if you can't pay the fee, don't have a fire." We should have all firefighting be for-profit. It would eliminate the socialist aspect of firefighting and also stop the long lines that kill many people in other countries who are waiting for their houses to be put out while socialist firefighters are rescuing cats from trees.

Who's with me? Who wants to start the first FMO?

I'm a socialist Democrat so I'm all in favor of that. Sorry I believe people are in this together and everyone benefits when a society as a whole lives well. The example you give isn't as far fetched as it sounds. There used to be a time when it worked like that. Till people understood there was a better way. How long it will take before Americans will understand the same about healthcare no one knows but i!t will happen and once it's in place It will be just as self evident

That sounds retarded. If a town did not want to have a fire department, they have that option. Most towns do, in fact I think all of them do. It is not socialist because it is not redistributing wealth, it is an emergency service, and it is not a right. It's just 'there' for emergency purposes. It falls under promoting the general welfare.

And the socialist police departments . They have taken over the drug trade in America allowing certain people the freedom to make millions while stopping the local dealers from moving out of poverty .
Forfeiture laws demand that property be seized from drug dealers and other low level street criminals yet the mansions of the shipping magnets who provide the cargo space aboard their ships go un- punished .

The Captains of large vessels routinely turn a blind eye to certain cargo and it even passes through customs heading to Americas streets .

Yes socialism is the ruin of any nation . LOL the government likes it the way they have it set up now .
We the social people who rely on each other for all our needs must pay a heavy price for this in taxes so that we never really have anything the managers of socialism do not wish us to have .

As soon as people mention a fair wage or fair treatment of the people socialism takes on a bad name .

...and the socialist school system, the socialist police services, the socialist roadways, sidewalks, airports, government controlled airways, the socialist park system, food inspection...if you're concerned about food safety, grow your own and don't ask ME to pay for YOUR food safety....., and the socialist churches...think of how much profit they could make if they charge admission....you wanna get right with God, pay for it....and stop asking me to subsidize the churches by giving them tax exempt status...they're costing me hard earned money that I should be able to keep.

Funny how some answers here differentiate between a local service and a Federal service as if to say if it WERE federal it might BE socialist, but if it's local, it's OK....hmmmmm

I didnt know the federal government had fire departments....

the federal government also provides money through grants and loans to hospitals, doctors and researchers to better their facilities. So you have just made the case that the current healthcare systems is exactly like the fire system yet you want the government to control all the healthcare should we also have a national police force?

funny

Do you even know what taxes fund your "socialist" Fire Department? Any clue at all?

Property Tax
Sales Tax
Excise Tax

None of these are compulsary taxes. I have the right not to own property therefore I have the right not to fund them in this way. I have the right not to buy consumer goods so I don't "have to" fund them in this way.

The fire department, police, EMT and all these examples you clever little Marxists come up with have no relationship to nor any characteristics of socialism in any way shape or form.

These services are public services or merit services, services which may (according to prevailing social norms) be under-provided by the market. In most cases public services are services, i.e. they do not involve manufacturing of goods such as nuts and bolts. Public services tend to be those considered so essential to modern life that for moral reasons their universal provision should be guaranteed, and they may be associated with fundamental human rights.

Socialism is state controlled production of goods.

From Merriam-Webster:

so·cial·ism (ssh-lzm) KEY

NOUN:

Any of various theories or systems of social organization in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that often plans and controls the economy.

The stage in Marxist-Leninist theory intermediate between capitalism and communism, in which collective ownership of the economy under the dictatorship of the proletariat has not yet been successfully achieved.

Not sick of the Fire Department, just sick of you socialists not even understanding the concept.

Edited: Medicine isn't a right, it might be a merit service however it is one realm in which government control has failed miserably in every instance it has been applied. You want the same agency that runs the VA to run your healthcare, do you? I am married to a Brit her whole family, of course, are Brits and not one of them would trade our system for theirs, and theirs is widely regarded as "the best" socialized system.

Control lawsuits, regulate the insurance industry, by all means but don't bring mediocrity to our healthcare. Competition is healthy. Some of our citizens don't recieve its benefit thats true. But the overwhelming majority do. That is a free market, we have the opportunity to achieve and recieve the best of anything, only if we strive for it. The socialist never has the opportunity for the best only for the mediocre.

"If we are made in some degree for others, yet in a greater are we made for ourselves. It were contrary to feeling, and indeed ridiculous, to suppose that a man has less right to himself than one of his neighbors, or indeed all of them put together. This would be slavery, and not that liberty which the bill of rights has made inviolable, and for the preservation of which our government has been charged." - TJ

Fire grants are funded by federal tax on gasoline and on excise taxes on imports, again not compulsory taxes.

Um? FD's are for security. FD's are governed by the City, not Federally. Alot of times in Rural areas they are on a volunteer basis. Much like Christian homeless shelters.

Wow!!! They must not teach Civics in public schools anymore.

EDIT: Socialism would be when the federal government steps in and regulates municipal and volunteer fire departments and controls their ability to fight fires.
