Some terrific answers out there.........
Elvis, having been born in Mississippi in the 30's, certainly had a good foundation for his "country" background - no doubt about that.
He never forgot it either, The very first song he ever sang in a studio audition for Sam Phillips (Sun Records,) was "Blue Moon of Kentucky - a bluegrass classic by Bill Monroe that he'd undoubtedly heard on the "Opry" when he was a kid.
As one respondent mentioned, it was Elvis' ability to combine all of the musical elements he'd been exposed to in the deep South...country/gospel/blues......to virtually create the Rock-a-Billy sound.
Note that the same goes for Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis - all of whom "hung out together" in/around the Sun Records studio in the early 50's.
Granted.......Colonel Parker did a masterful job of promoting Elvis into something "larger than life," but Elvis is one of the greatest pioneers in Music (all of it) that ever was.or will be.

Of course he sang country. Country, gospel, and although he was one of the most influential Rockabilly artists, I can never consider him the original. I'm a big fan, but he's still not the original Rockabilly artist in my opinion.
