I don't know about 2008, but when I lived in Montreal, all stores except maybe the big Loblawses and most deps were closed on Jan. 2. Plus what the other answerer said.

The banks, government offices, and most schools are definitely closed. Doctors , dentists and other private health professionals should also have offices closed. Almost everything else is open, but they open in the afternoon.
