I've decided to make my stand against the consumerism rampant during the holidays. Everyone in my family is in their thirties or older, enough with the presents already, its stressful, pointless, and wasteful! If we have enough money to shop we should give it to someone who really needs it. None in my family are wanting for anything, so I feel this is what we should be doing to truly celebrate the season. This is very unusual for us and I'm wondering if I will get backlash. If I do I am fully prepared to defend my position, as I am deliberate in all my actions and do not go forward without complete conviction. Tell me what you think.

Gifts are about the recipient, not the giver. In order for the recipient to understand that you personalized the gift to them, you should donate to a cause that they, rather than you, are partial to (of course, you may share interest in that cause). Also, the donation should be made in their name. If you do this, there should be no reason to "defend" your position. It's the holiday season, not a revolution!
Ideally, making the world a better place begins with one's self, followed by one's immediate circle, and then spreads outwards. To echo what the first respondent said, keep a spirit of generosity and creativity as you consider which charities the recipients themselves would give to (empathetic), rather than intentions to make your point (self-oriented). This will not only be more diplomatic, but more rewarding for you, as you will come to know the individuals in your circle better through empathy.

Just make sure you don't go into the explaination from a defensive stand point. Just explain that this year rather than giving gifts, you will be making donations to various charities. Maybe you can ask people who are planning on gifting you to grab an Angel of the giving trees at stores and do that in your honor instead.

I think if you are nice and polite it won't be a problem. If you attack them for their wanting to do gift exchanges it will be an issue.

I think that's a great idea. Why not. I have small children still . I think this may be a good choice later for my family.
Thanks and GOD BLESS

For years I wish I could do something like that. Just do it, for those of us who can't and for yourself.

Have fun!
