Romanian player and former world #1 Ilie Nastase, who was known for his verbal abuse and intimidation of linesmen, umpires and even ball kids, and gamesmanship (i.e. head games) against opponents. He also had a reputation for tanking matches, although this is difficult to prove. He won the 1972 U.S. Open and 1973 French Open and was ranked #1 from August 23, 1973 to June 2, 1974. His "nasty" behavior, along with his last name, earned him that nickname.

it was the Romanian Ilie Nastase...or Nasty Nastase because of his antics on the court. He was the original "bad boy" of tennis before John McEnroe came around.
