It doesn't seem to work for me. I have a real good belly laugh and think I must tell so and so but, sometimes, even though I remember the punch line, I tell the joke so badly everybody laughs in sympathy!

Debi C, lets hear some of your punch lines and we'll see if we can put jokes to them!

There are good, competent, joke tellers; and then there are those who are not.
I belong to the latter. I know exactly what you mean. Welcome to the Club.

I can't tell jokes at all! I usually remember the joke but just muddle up the punchline so no one laughs as they usually don't even realise I've said it and are still waiting for it to come. My Hubby on the other hand can remember a good joke (or ten) for every occasion. The only problem is he drags them out for so long by embellishing them that much that everyone gets bored before he gets to the punchline because they've forgotten what the joke was about in the beginning! Don't think it would be wise for either of us to take up stand-up, better stick to the day jobs!

It's good to practice or re-tell the joke pretty soon after you hear it or you won't be able to remember it properly later on when you "have an audience".
It helps to have a good delivery, too.
You should start with short (Easy to remember) riddles or one liners like:
Q: What do men and snow have in common?
A: You never know how many inches you're going to get or how long it's going to last.
Q: What's the hardest thing in the world?
A: Puttin' it in soft.
(Men don't laugh as loud a women on this one!)
Q: What's white and 11 inches?
A: Nothing
Q: What does a dog do....that a man steps in?
(Not what you might think)
A: Pants

After tending bar for so many years... I just can't even begin to tell you how many jokes I've heard and told... Now, I'm lucky to remember the word socks, much less a whole joke!
I think it has something to do with the medications they have me on! I do like hearing a good joke though! Who doesn't love to laugh!

nope, just because you remember the punch line doesn't mean you can remember the details leading up to it.
regarding your plight of telling jokes...
A man was taken to prison and he was afrad of things happening to him, based on stories. His cellmate told him, just relax, we are all just trying to do our time so we can get out. Just then, someone yelled out 21 and everyone laughed, but the new guy asked "what's going on"?? Just as he started to answer, another guy yelled out 15 and everyone laughed again. The oldtimer explained "we've all been here for so long and kept telling the same jokes over and over, so we wrote them up in a little book and numbered each one, so instead of telling the entire joke, we just call out the number and everyone knows which joke it is."
The new guy thought "great, I'll just call out a number so they will think I'm one of them". so he calls out 12, but no one laughs, then he calls out 18, but no one laughs. He thinks "well, they laughed at 15 and 21, so he calls out 15... again no laughs.
He turns to his cellmate and asks "why didn't they laugh" and his cellmate said "well, some people can tell jokes, some can't."

Your are right. Remembering the punch line doesn't necessarily mean the teller can remember to tell the joke right.

Me too - I have given up telling jokes unless they are one liners - I have been know to even mess those up before now!!
Some people have a knack for telling jokes - others just can't do it...like us!! Just listen to the jokes and enjoy instead!

Not true...
The joke is simply the setup to the punchline. It could be any number of things and needs only get you from point A to point B in a reasonable amount of time.
Having said that, I'm pretty good at remembering jokes but cannot (for the life of me...) remember the setup to one of my all-time favorite punchlines: "Rectum? Damn near killed 'im!"
I think that one's better without the joke though...

I am a very poor joke teller because I laugh before the end and it spoils it for everyone else.
