Plug it in, connect to it with a NETWORK CABLE initially.
Read setup guides it comes with (might be on CD)
Follow their instructions and set it up.
For wireless, IF IT supports it, I ALWAYS enable "Mac Address filtering" so that ONLY MY devices can connect, also enable WEP or WPA as a secondary precaution.
Most of all READ the INSTRUCTIONS it comes with

The hardest part is usually finding the right location so that the signal reaches your laptop anywhere in the building. But initally, all you need to do is connect the router to your cable modem, power it up and let it negotiate with the modem, then power up your laptop and let it seek the router signal. Follow the instructions that come with the router to set up security.
Be aware that router bandwidth is about 1/10th that of a wired connection so expect somewhat slower performance between any other computers on your network.

Very easy, most routers come with a manual which is so easy to read anyone could do it.
Your modem plugs to the router instead of the PC, and for first time setup you plug the PC to the router, hit http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar to enter the router configuration and set it up the way you want. The manual describes it so easily, what I just said sums up how to enter the configuration, everything else you will pick up quickly as you go.
Once it's setup you'll be able to walk around the house with your laptop online with no problem.

It is so simple. When you buy the wireless router, it will come with very easy to follow connection instructions. A 10 year old can do it.
