Dont get me wrong, folks. I have a southern accent and I get pissed when people say it makes us sound uneducated. Don't forget, I'm a North Carolina boy...born and raised.

I like some southern accents. There are some that are ugly.
I am from Massachusetts. We have some ugly accents here. I graduated from a big southern university. I liked a lot of the accents down there. It never gave me the impression that someone was less educated. I've met quite a few people down south who are very smart and intelligent. It does seem that some people are more naive. If you grow up in a rural area then that it is to be expected, isn't it?

I too cannot stand the way yuppie hippies talk, like the way the girls talk on the hills. Bored, spoiled rotten brats. I hate it.
My stepdaughter talks that way and I heard some other girls talk that way in the grocery store. I wish they would stop. It's irritating.

I am from the mid-south with a somewhat southern accent and NO I don't think it makes people sound less educated at all! Being southern doesn't make a person stupid...even if it does kinda sound that way sometimes!!! LOL =D

I'm from Tennessee, so yes, I love a southern accent. It's bad to stereotype people based on the way they talk. I just moved to St. Louis and I have met more "hicks" here than I ever met in Nashville. I think it really has more to do with city and country living. You will find more uneducated people in rural areas located in any state. The south just tends to have more rural areas.

do you like northern accents? whats the problem? people talk different, its according to where they live and the lingo. Southerners have been stereo typed in all the movies as being less educated and dumb. I think basically the movie industry has done this to our society. Just like all the blond jokes, everyone that is blond is not dingy! all people that do not work out in the public are not Lazy! there are many more that i could list. but the answer to your question is yes and no

I am a southern belle and I have a southern accent, but I don't like it. I am very educated and for some reason when I speak, people don't take me seriously because of my accent. That's why I write alot. People don't have a clue I am from Mississippi when they read my books and poetry. They think I am an educated young lady which is what I really am!

No, it doesn't make them sound less educated. I love hearing Southerners talk. Sometimes, a person can have a southern accent that is too southern, but other than that, I love hearing them say certain words.

Paula Dean's sounds so intentional and exaggerated, it just makes her seem phony and sort of dishonest.
I like some. Not all southern accents are the same. Those that sound less educated may be a result of just that.

I don't think it is the accent as much as the poor grammar and misuse of the language that seems to prevail in the South.
I am not saying that everyone who lives in South is uneducated or sounds that way.. in fact, many people are very educated and speak very well.

Ya'll got a problem with that? Of course it doesn't make people sound less educated. But it does distinguish them from other areas of the country.
