I was. I got 80 cents an hour as a clerk in a bait shop, that would be about $12.00 an hour in today's money.
Bread was 25 cents a loaf
Gas was 18 cents
a Volvo was $1,600 new and got 20mpg
You could rent a decent house for $25 a month
My parents fancy house was $35,000 at 4% interest
but you could buy a house easily for $5,000
Sales taxes were 2% (on the lower prices)
A friend's father was a very successful doctor making $25,000 a year
Hal Geneen set the record for highest pay to a CEO of ITT at $800,000 a year to howls of outrage
The CEO of Avis was making $35,000 though others at places like General Motors were making sums like $250k and 500k
Those guys making over $100k had many ways to dodge taxes, but theoretically would have paid 90% taxes on that income, while those making $50k would be paying much less. Still the Government got 80% of its revenue from Corporations, not individuals.
In spite of the "high" minimum wage, jobs were not hard to come by and one could easily make a living just doing some craft and selling it at "galleries" stores or flea markets. Try that now and you will starve.

I agree. When I worked at a minimum wage job, I did a lot. I really worked hard. And now since I'm a like higher on the scale, I don't do as much as I did. And it is sort of true. The higher you move on the pay scale the less you have to do. So yea I completely agree with you 100%. It sucked butt.

A few times i was paid minimum wage, and every time I was given a raise and promoted very quickly. You see, if one is willing to prove their worth, they wont be at min. wage for long. However, if one lacks motivation but does have the traits of thinking the world owes them--then they will stay at minimum wage. The irony is that they cant be paid what they actually worth!!!! the generous side of 5 cents an hour.
And those are the exact people who cry how hard it is to survive and how we need to raaise their minimum nothing wage to improve their sorry way of viewing life, when a little ambition would fix their problem to begin with.........and when this type of person surfaces, we call them a lazy commy Lib, because thats where their nothing vote goes!!

When I was a teen. I couldn't have supported myself on it, but it was good enough for my purposes. I have friends now who earn minimum wage or barely above, put in 40+ hours a week, but can't support themselves. One of my friends had to sell his home. He was injured at work and has only been able to find a minimum wage job within his restrictions. He is willing to work outside of his restrictions, but employers are afraid to hire him. He is the nicest person, it's kind of sad. He is extremely conservative and will probably vote for the candidate that will not increase his wage in the next election. Go figure. But then again, we come from a place where people don't expect a lot, just enough to get by and time to spend with family and friends.

Yes, and at the time it was good money (better than nothing). When you're in high school working a job requiring little skill, with no overhead and no bills or house payments, minimum wage is fine.

Yes, when I was in college. Our employer would have paid us less if he thought he could get away with it. At the time, I thought the minimum wage should be increased.

I was paid below minimum wage in several jobs as a kid; picking oranges, mowing lawns, etc. I worked for minimum wage at 2 or 3 jobs also; bag boy, disney sweeper, runabout at a cycle shop. I was okay with it but it taught me I needed to prepare myself to be capable of better jobs...i.e. do half way well in school and get a college education in a field I belived would support me and my future family in this country.

No. Even when I had summer jobs in High School I was payed over minimum wage. And I was fine with it. Seemed like a fortune to me
"yes and it sucked. of course it should be raised. the gap btwn have and have nots grows wider every day"
They have been saying this for over 100 years now, I watched a documentary that took place in the 1910's , and they were saying the same thing!
