I am sixty years old... and I still stupidly stuff my emotions once in awhile. Am better about it than I used to be... but it's human to avoid what doesn't feel good. This can manifest as stomach pain, headaches, rashes, and fatigue among other nasty symptoms! In the long run it's best to find a way to express emotion...even if it takes professional counseling to do it. Talking with someone you can trust almost always helps... as long as you don't get into self-pity! Once in awhile...a good cry in a sad movie is better than anything else at all. Most of us express happy pretty well...it's the sad, angry and hurt that come back to bite us. Talk about it...figure out what you can DO about it...and if it can't be solved...let it go! Good luck and hugs!

I think that many people who have had difficult or frightening lives will sometimes turn off the ability to feel emotions. For many people it is a survival tool; if they felt all their emotions, they would be incapacitated. People who have learned to turn off their emotions often have a very difficult time learning to feel their emotions once it's safe for them to do so.

I feel my emotions, but they're not as strong as when I was younger. As I've gotten older I've become more philosophical, which tends to keep my emotions more on an even keel. As one gets older, it's easier to see things in the long term perspective. Many things which seemed important are now minor in my view. Except for the physical problems, old age is much easier than being young. :-)

Sometimes I do. Wanting to cry and not being able to, causes
tightness in the chest and breathing problems, insomnia and
a whole ration of psychosomatic problems...that are just as
real as physiological ones. When I was younger, I had no
problem crying over situational things in my life, but as
I got older and started to understand the big overview,
I developed deep compassion for the human condition
and sort of started to save all my little crocodile tears
for the big issues that truly move me emotionally. African
famine, orphaned children in war torn countries, animal
abuse. I just let the sky open up with tears then. So
yes to the personal stuff and no to the bigger picture.

Hi Rena,
I've heard too that bottling up your emotions inside can cause physical and other problems. I have no difficulty feeling my emotions ... I'm really in touch with that side of me. I do however bottle things up in that I keep them to myself and I'm far too sensitive. Tension can cause physical ailments i.e. high blood pressure etc so maybe you are right.

yes i do. the only time when i actually could figure out what i was feeling was when my bf and i broke up or were broken up a while back ago. after we broke up i took it as a shock that kept me busy for days at a time until one day when i finally sat down, it sank in and i cried. besides that i know what i am feeling or what kind of emotions are going on because my body language as well as my personality will speak it louder than words do.

Sometimes I tend to hide my Emotions, when I have lost a Loved one, is the most difficult one I have encountered. Otherwise when I am very angry I tend to hide the emotion I am feeling. But when I let go of my Emotions, is when all Hell breaks loose. Excuse my Pun.

I feel my emotions easily - and identify them without a problem.

Physical and mental problems occur when emotions are not expressed or acknowledged. Most especially anger. If it is not dealt with and gotten rid of, it turns inward and causes depression.

Depression in of itself causes physical ailments - some short-term, others far-reaching.

To sum it up, to be holistically healthy, be in touch with your emotions.

As I get older, I've had to try to relieve toxic emotions by controlling what I feel.
It is when one is still dependant on others that they suffer emotional mutation in order to please.
Yes. Bottled up emotions can be toxic, causing cardiac arrest and it's like.

I don't know if that is true or not, only because I have always felt my emotions too strongly, not feeling emotions has never been a problem!!

No, I don't. I agree that people who don't could have physical problems, but even feeling a lot of sadness will create physical problems also.
