I always recommend wikipedia.org

Alexander was the son of Phillip of Macedonia. He came to power around 335 (?) BC, and immediately began to conquer the world. He moved east for Greece into Asia Minor (Turkey), conquering the Persians throughout the area. He moved through Palestine, conquered Egpt, the Babylon. Finally, he conquere Persia and moved into India. He died in Babylon returning from these conquests at the age of 33.

His empire was divided up to his four Generals, and ultimately conquered by the Romans and the Parthains

The greatest contribution of Alexander to the world was introducing most of the world to the Greek language. This made it possible for the Romans to have a single unifying language throughout the mediterrenean and into the mid-east. Prior to this, there was no single dominant language

He allowed the Hellenistic culture to spread throughout the world.

His conquests brought classical knowledge to areas throughout the near and middle-east. The same conquests made it evident that Greek culture had value, and in some ways more value than that of other cultures.

Some of that knowledge eventually passed to us, since some of the knowledge that stayed in Europe was destroyed during the Dark Ages.
