Your Provisonal license on a motorbike only last for 2 years.
You must take a cbt training to ride up to 125cc with 12 bhp.
Before buying anything, check insurance quotes.
One good point to remember, If you can afford it, buy a new bike as dealers give good deals on certain learner bikes that will include the cbt and insurance-shop around for different quotes-they need your custom. Get a copy of motorcycle news. Alot of info in there.
Good luck.

16 is less than 50 CC
At 17 it is up to 125CC
Either way you need a provisional licence and your CBT
your CBT only lasts for two years.
Your photo licence is valid for ten years maximum.
So you could ride anything below this IE 50cc 70cc 80cc 90cc 100cc 110cc being the popular sizes below.
You don't have to buy new you can buy second hand. This means that a 125 from the 1970's is legal for you to ride as a learner, though you would be hard pushed to find one on the road.
It sounds like your mates have bored out or de-resticted their bikes.
If you have a moped and de restrict it it becomes a motorcycle.
If you have a 125 and derestrict it it is still likely to be a 125 but the power is likely to be above the legal limit. most are at 12 PS though the limit is 14.5 PS.
If derestricted and you are caught and it is proven
1 your insurance is invalid
2 you might be infringing your license
3 it might infringe the Road Traffic act.
Either 1,2,or 3 and yuor bike can be siezed under section 136 of the road traffic offender act and a destruction order issued for it to be crushed.
so try explaining that to your parents, :-)

Phillip is NOT exaggerating and this is not a grey area. The limits are set out in the relevant traffic law - what gets difficult is proving that your machine is de-restricted. As some-one has already mentioned, if the case is proved you are guilty of riding without a licence or insurance.
BTW, the provisional licence does not expire after 2 years, that was changed several years back. It's the CBT that expires after 2 years, if you haven't passed a practical test in the meantime. If you want to retake CBT every 2 years at a cost of £80 -100 you can, but you'll be limited to a 125cc bike up to 11 kw (14.6bhp) output if you are 17 or above, 50cc / 50kph at 16.

phillip is exaggerating!
the whole de-restriction thing is a grey area of the law, when a bike/moped is restricted it loses a lot of power, therefore acceleration is affected aswell as overall speed, this means that pulling out of junctions is more dangerous as is riding on a dual carraigeway of any sort.
you can legally ride a 125.
the aprillia rs125 is meant to be the best out there, top speed of about 110mph. however these are expensive, if u want a cheap new 125 u need to look at the imports which are replicas, these are a lot cheaper!

Between the age of 17 and 21, you are limited by law to a machine not exceeding 125cc, with no more than 14.6bhp (11kw).
Once you have passed your test, you will be limited to a machine with no more than 33bhp (25kw) for 2 years, or until you reach 21 years of age.
If your friends are doing as you claim, they ARE breaking the law (see DVLA link below):

As long as your over 17 and put L-plates on you can ride a 125cc. Want anything bigger and you need to take your full test.
